Meet Kurt Rasmussen, First Grade Teacher
I lived in Oakland for most of my childhood. After graduating high school, I came to Arcata in the mid 1080’s to attend Humboldt State University. While there I worked toward a degree in history. I made several life-long friends at HSU and enjoyed my time there.
It was during summer break one year that I began working with children. I got a job at summer camp in the bay area. I would be counselor to a group of 6 year old boys, planning activities for them, and leading them through the camp experience. At first I was terrified. As the beginning of camp grew closer I asked several times, “What did I get myself into?”
It turned out to be a great decision. Working at the camp helped me to realize how much I enjoy working with children. In total I spent four summers at the camp. It led me to furthering my education after graduating from HSU. I went back for an additional year to receive my teaching credential.
I have been teaching at Loleta since 1999. I began teaching first grade, and moved to other grades as needed by the school. Since beginning I have taught grades 1-5 at various times. I returned to first grade a few years ago. It is a great grade to teach! I am very happy I made the change.
